BMW M5 CSL, One and Only

A one-off BMW M5 CSL was unveiled at the company's Nurburgring workshop. The prototype is a unique M Division example that forms part of the M5 brand's 25th anniversary celebrations.
The big news is the engine which was modified from the factory 5.0-litre V10 to a larger 5.5-litres via increased stroke, making it M Division's largest ever. Modifications include a carbon fibre manifold with an increased capacity air box and secondary oil cooler. As a result another air duct was created on the front bumper to accommodate it.
One way to qualify as a CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) is to shed body mass, which this one did. A carbon fibre roof was employed and some interior parts stripped down. For example standard front seats were replaced with carbon fibre units and the rear one removed completely. A total weight saving of 50kg was achieved. The suspension was also slightly modified but kept close to standard.
Long-time BMW race driver Claudia Huertgen has taken the car around the ‘Ring and claims to have posted a sub-8 minute time.

Lexus LFA Officially Unveiled in Tokyo

Following years of speculation, some extensive spy material and several leaks, Lexus has finally unveiled its very first supercar. A prototype of the two-seat LFA is now on display at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

Official details reveal some stunning figures which give meat to recent videos. The sound heard on that video is partly because of equal-length exhaust manifolds mated to an equal-length dual exhaust system and routed through a multistage titanium main muffler. The LFA is indeed powered by a naturally aspirated V10 displacing 4.8 litre (4,805cc). Thanks to its aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and titanium alloy construction it is actually lighter than a normal V8 engine.

Maximum power is an assuring 412kW (560hp) made at a screaming 8,700rpm while peak torque is 480Nm at 6,800rpm. Ninety percent of torque is available between 3,700rpm and 9,000rpm. It all goes to the rear wheels via a 6-speed ASG transmission featuring heavy-duty synchronizer rings and a newly developed gearshift actuator. A 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds is claimed while top speed is 325km/h (202mph).

The relatively low weight of 1480kg (3,263 lbs) was achieved through measures such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) cabin, said to be 100kg lighter than an equivalent aluminium one. Total vehicle length is 4.51m, width is 1.90m and height is a midget-sized 1.22m. It features a double wishbone front suspension and a multilink system at the rear. Brakes are carbon ceramic material to make stops as quickly as possible. The LFA gets 265/35ZR20 (95Y) front tyres and 305/30ZR20 (99Y) types at the back.

Aerodynamic elements include a flat underbody, a rear diffuser and a speed-controlled rear wing. The interior can be custom-tailored to suit buyers' needs while showing off a very high-tech instrumentation design.

Only 500 units will be sold worldwide between the start of production in December 2010 and when it ends in December 2012. A more race-focused model will be introduced in 2011. Suggested minimum prices are US$375,000 (€250,720). Prices in Japan will be ¥37.5 million a unit.

Speculations: Production Audi e-tron to be Named R4

A new report posted on AutoExpress speculates the future of the rumoured mini R8. The Audi R4 will be the production version of the eTron electric car concept shown off at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Slotted between the Audi TT and the Audi R8, the all-electric R4 will likely have conventional combustion engine options as well. It will possibly share a platform with the Porsche Cayman, and the upcoming Boxster, and should utilize aspects of the Aluminum Space Frame.

Expect the electric model to run on lithium-ion batteries, sending power to the dual electric motors mounted on each axle. Expect these four motors to combine for well over the Tesla Roadster's output of 248 horsepower. As the TT Coupe 2.0 TFSI has a top speed of 149 mph, the production R4 could advance beyond the eTron's 124mph top speed. Because of a robust amount of torque, expect the TT Coupe's 6.6-second time to be shattered by the R4.

A full-charge may be able to take the R4 155 miles without plugging in, but that may not be enough to lure Tesla Roadster customers.

Citroen C-Cactus Alleged Leaked Images

Last year, Citroen announced that it was conducting a feasibility study for the C-Cactus concept in order to assess whether taking the model to production would be a viable business option.

Now, these photos have leaked of an alleged C-Cactus in development, although we cannot confirm the authenticity of the images here.

The C-Cactus Concept first debuted at the Frankfurt motor show in 2007. The objective was to create a green car (lighter and with low emissions) that also has a low cost of production through a a simpler assembly process using less parts and recycled materials.

Speculation is that Citroen would turn the C-Cactus concept into a sub-brand called "Essentiele". With Essentiele being an entry-level Citroen range with the DS label serving as the automaker's premium range.

The C-Cactus would likely be powered by a new diesel-hybrid drivetrain that PSA Group is developing, possibly with a 3-cylinder diesel of unspecified horsepower coupled to an electric motor. It would be the first model in the Essentiele range, and may make it to market by as early as 2012.

Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept

New images of Mazda's MX-5 Superlight Concept have hit the web.

Designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MX-5/Miata, the concept features a racing-inspired exterior that lacks a windscreen. Other changes include a revised front end, integrated air scoops (that serve as roll-over bars), a streamlined profile, and a Mazdaspeed dual exhaust system.

Tipping the scales at 2,195 pounds (995 kg), the MX-5 is powered by an anemic 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 126 hp. While this likely results in stellar fuel efficiency, the concept reluctantly accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

Look for more information to be released when the concept officially debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Hyundai releases ix35 teaser - Debut in Frankfurt

The Frankfurt Motor Show will mark the end of the Tucson brand when Hyundai introduces the world to the new ix35 SUV. The Tucson has been a very successful vehicle for its makers, with a regular spot on the top 5 SUV brands list in Europe. Sales have even peaked at 63,000 for the continental market.

"SUVs have been a cornerstone of our success for many years and have helped to raise awareness of the Hyundai brand in Europe," says Allan Rushforth, Vice-President of Hyundai Motor Europe. "With Tucson in particular we have demonstrated our expertise in producing SUVs which not only meet consumer expectations but also help to shape the sector itself."

The ix35 will be Hyundai's first SUV to be produced in Europe from scratch, that is, from conception right up to final engineering. Its design style is inspired by the ix-onic Concept car from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

A second debut for the segment will be a heavily-revised Santa Fe which gets cosmetic and engineering upgrades. Power will come from the group's R turbo diesel engine.

Europe is clearly the choice destination for these two SUVs but other markets will also be able to source some models from the range. First deliveries should take place within the next six months.

Ferrari 458 Italia spotted again on the road

Here is the new Ferrari 458 Italia spotted somewhere on the road, probably in Italy. Yes, these cellphone pics are a little low-res, but certainly we can, detective-like, spot some news here somewhere?

That landscape around the highway does indeed match the flatlands of the Padania, the area around the Po river of Italy. Definitely in the same neighborhood as Ferrari's Maranello headquarters in the Italian province of Emilia-Romagna. Okay, so we can guess that Ferrari is still keeping the 458 close to home.

What else?

Despite its initial media release, the 458 is masking itself with a convenient disguise. Hiding its design lines behind the black color of one model and the blushing yellow paint job of the other, each with white stripes and spots to obscure its features. Still, we can get a pretty good idea of what it will look like.

BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible Facelift Spy Photos

Just over a year ago BMW unveiled the facelifted 3 Series sedan. The time will soon come for the Coupe and the Convertible to show their faces in full too. But for now we must satisfy our curiosity with these spy pictures of both models doing final testing before their public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Modifications include a new front bumper, headlamps, LED rear lights and a new rear bumper. Previous spy pictures showed only the front bumper in disguise but these snapped shots show the true changes. Both models will exhibit these changes when unveiled in September.

Since BMW has a habit of escorting a new product launch or update with a new engine or an upgraded one, our curiosity is running at full speed trying to figure out which new powerplant will accompany these cars. That information might leak out ahead of the show. If not then the wait will be a long one.

Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari has officially taken the wraps off their highly anticipated F430 replacement, the 458 Italia.

Described as a "massive leap forward" and a "genuine departure from the current range", Ferrari considers the new supercar to be "a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology."

Boasting a futuristic Pininfarina design, the 458 Italia has a compact aerodynamic shape which helps to reduce drag and improve downforce (which is 140 kg at 200km/h). The front end features a bold grille which houses small aero-elastic winglets "which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag." Elsewhere, the car features small openings between the hood and headlights for added engine cooling. Out back, the 458 has aggressive rear end which houses a massive diffuser, California-style taillights, and three center-mounted exhaust tips.

Power comes from a new direct injected 4499 cc V8 engine that produces 570 CV (at 9000 rpm) and 540 Nm of torque (at 6000 rpm, with over 80% available from 3250 rpm). This is backed up by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which has been specially engineered to match the power and torque curves of the new V8. Ferrari estimates the 458 Italia will rocket from 0-100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed in excess of 325 km/h (202 mph).

Riding on a lightweight aluminum chassis (the car has a dry weight of 1380 kg/3042 lbs), the 458 Italia boasts a 42/58 weight distribution which promises to deliver outstanding driving dynamics. This is further backed up by a twin wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear set-up. Ferrari also equipped the car with an advanced direct steering system, updated versions of E-Diff and F1-Trac which offer a 32% increase in longitudinal acceleration, and a high performance braking system which cuts the car's 100-0 km/h braking distance to a short 32.5 meters (106.6 feet).

As with all Ferraris, the 458 Italia features numerous lessons learned from company's Formula 1 racing efforts. One of the key improvements is a reduction of internal engine friction which helps to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Thanks to this racing derived knowledge, the car has fuel consumption rating of 13.7L/100 km while CO2 emissions are 320 g/km. Elsewhere, the company added a unique racing-inspired steering wheel and dashboard which slope down and away from the driver to minimize distractions.

Look for more information and details to be released closer to the 458's official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

2010 Jaguar XJ Officially Revealed

As promised the all-new Jaguar XJ has been unveiled during an exclusive event at the Saatchi Gallery in London this evening. Jaguar Cars Managing Director Mike O'Driscoll was the key speaker at the event while talk show host and car nut Jay Leno was the host. The list of VIP guests included celebrities, business leaders and other public figures.

Jaguar anticipates that the super luxury British sedan will infuse a daring new spirit in its segment, thanks to a bold new design direction, good performance and a high standard of engineering excellence.

"The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar," said Ian Callum, Design Director and the man who penned the XF as well. "Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car's side windows, that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar's new design direction."

A standout exterior feature is the panoramic glass roof that not only creates extra interior light but also gives the XJ a lower roofline. Jaguar says it will offer both the standard car and the long-wheel-base version right from the get go. The latter is 125mm longer but both versions have a boot as big as 520 litres in volume.

Aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture was used in constructing the XJ, making it lighter (by at least 150kg) than its competitors. That of course improves performance and fuel consumption. The aluminium solution will allow Jaguar to better its carbon footprint because it has 50 percent recyclable material and is potentially able to save up to three tonnes of C02 gases per car.

Some driving comfort technologies utilised include the Adaptive Dynamics - which is continuously variable damping - an air suspension system, and active differential control.

The interior space features chrome and piano black detailing, leather and veneer surfaces, and other niceties depending on whether customers choose the Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, Supercharged or the range-topping Supersport models.

The gadgets and comfort creatures list has things like an 8-inch touch screen for playing DVD movies, a 1200W Bowers & Wilkins sound system and the Media Hub.

The Gen III petrol and turbo diesel engines make their way into the XJ. These are the 3.0-litre V6 diesel which has a base price of £52,500, the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 with 385hp (283kW), the 5.0-litre V8 supercharged making 510hp (375kW) and a new 470hp (346kW) version of the supercharged V8. Jaguar's official combined economy figure for the diesel is 40.1 mpg and its C02 emissions figure is 184g/km. The rear wheels are driven through a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Orders have been opened for the XJ and deliveries will begin in early 2010.

Pagani Cinque Roadster Revealed

If the Pagoni Zonda Cinque doesn't seem rare, exclusive, or exotic enough for you, Horacio Pagani and company have a solution: the Zonda Cinque Roadster.

Like the Zonda Cinque, the Roadster is a limited-edition, five-car model run. The street-legal Zonda R is almost identical to the hardtop, though the carbon-titanium chassis has been tweaked to accommodate the removable roof. With the top removed, the Zonda Cinque Roadster sports a mostly-open cabin with only an engine air scoop protruding above. The roof is stored up front.

The specifications mark the Zonda Cinque Roadster as the most exotic of exotics: an AMG engine making 678 horsepower and 780 Nm torque, ceramic-coated titanium exhaust, traction control and a six-speed sequential transmission by Cima. The nineteen- and twenty-inch aluminum/magnesium wheels are forged by APP and wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero rubber, and of course Brembo provides carbo-ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers. The Zonda Cinque Roadster's 1210kg curb weight is the same as that of the hardtop, as is the reported 3.4-second 0-100km/h run.

The price? €1.3 million, plus taxes. That said, with a production run of just five vehicles, it's a fair bet that the Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster has already sold out.

Volkswagen Phaeton Facelifted Facelift Spied Testing

Volkswagen took quite a bit of flack for the Phaeton when it was launched in 2002. Critics admitted that it's a really great car but that VW had no business making such a big expensive vehicle and going after BMW's 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz's S-Class when the group had the Audi A8. No amount of bad publicity or sagging sales discouraged VW.

Now a second facelift is in order after the first one was completed in 2007. The 2007 job actually lifted sales and the company is probably counting on this one to do the same before a complete replacement appears in 2011.

From these spy pictures it seems that the front end will benefit from a redesign. So will the rear end apparently. Bumpers, lights and the bonnet should also get a nip and tuck. The front grille is possibly being redesigned to be more in sync with the current VW design language.

A number of engines will be carried over into the facelift while a few new others will be introduced. There is talk of the new Audi V12 TDI and a hybrid making the lineup too to make the car attractive for a possible American debut.

Rolls Royce Ghost Spied in White Livery

Just days after catching a two-tone Rolls-Royce Ghost, our spy photographers have managed to get the first pictures of a prototype decked out in white. Although the photos don't provide any new details about the upcoming entry-level model, they show the Ghost in one of the brand's most popular colors.

Commonly referred to as the "baby" Rolls-Royce, the 2010 Ghost is actually a massive car as it measures 5399mm (212.6 inches) in length, 3295mm (129.7 inches) in wheelbase, 1948mm (76.7 inches) in width, and 1550mm (61 inches) in height.

Power comes from a new 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 engine with more than 500 bhp. The engine is connected to an eight-speed ZF gearbox which was tuned to deliver unparalleled shift comfort and responsiveness. In order to keep this beast under control, Rolls-Royce has equipped the Ghost with an advanced air suspension system that offers dynamic handling while preserving a luxurious ride quality.

The Ghost will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with production beginning shortly thereafter.

Exclusive BMW M3 Edition Models Revealed

BMW is releasing a new version of their popular M3. The BMW M3 Edition Models will be available beginning this summer with several cosmetic changes and a dropped suspension.

The decision by BMW to release this edition now is a little surprising considering the fourth generation M3 is barely two years old. In a sluggish automotive market, perhaps BMW is trying to build a bit of momentum with their M-division.

Whatever the reason, the car does have some interesting cosmetic work. Available in three non-metallic colors (Alpine White, Black, and Dakar Yellow), as well as Monte Carlo Blue Metallic, the M3 Edition Models will have an interior specifically designed to match the exterior paint. A chrome package is included standard to accentuate "the truly sophisticated character of the Edition Models." They use a dark, eloxy-plated chrome for the quad tailpipes, kidney grille, and side gills. The color tone perfectly matches the blacked-out 19-inch M-series light alloy rims. Or, if you prefer, you can get the rims in either silver or a contrasting white. We recommend going with the dark rims, because they will also match the black mirror caps.

Inside, BMW uses white material on the center console and door-panel armrests when the vehicle is purchased with either a white or black exterior. Carbon Structure leather with white seams is also used. Black leather is used on the seats, with white seams. However, on the Dakar Yellow and Monte Carlo Blue editions the chosen exterior color is used throughout the interior, including on the back- and leg-rests. Armrests and door handles also use the exterior colors for contrasting seams. M-badged trim bars are designed with a checkered flag look.

The Alpine White model, with white interior accents and blacked out wheels, looks pretty hot. There are a few pictures here you can cycle through.

In addition to this, the entire M3 Edition Model has a body that is lowered by 10 millimeters. All of these vehicles come with a 4.0-liter V8 producing 420 hp. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with the M-series double-clutch Drivelogic system available as an option.

The BMW M3 Edition Models will be available beginning in July 2009. The new edition will only be sold for six months.

Rendered Speculation: 2011 BMW 6-Series

Some new artist rendering have surfaced showing what BMW's upcoming 2011 6-Series may look like.

While they're just one artist's interpretation, recent spy photos have shown the new 6-Series will feature aggressive styling that adopts several design cues from the Z4 roadster, 7-Series, and the CS concept.

Engine options will likely carry over from the current 6-Series, but the 360 hp 4.8-liter V8 will be replaced by the new 400 hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 from the new 7-Series. The M6 is also expected to drop its V10 engine with 500 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque for a slightly retuned version of the X5 M and X6 M's new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.

Mosler MT900 GTR XX Twin Turbo

Most of us would be happy (ecstatic, really) to own the 2009 Mosler MT900 GTR XX. However, as is often the case with items that claim to be the best, somebody has come around to make it even better.

John Gocha (we hope that's not actually "Gotcha!") and his company, Intense Automotive Design, claim to have stripped and rebuilt a Mosler MT900 GTR XX. In doing so, they have created a one-of-a-kind hellion - if the car really does exist. Even if the car only exists on paper, the concept alone is magnificent.

Nicknamed "The Land Shark", this car weighs a full 250 kg (551 lbs) less than the already lightened GTR XX, coming in at 861 kg (1898 lbs) with its fuel tanks full. Yes, we said "tanks", as in plural. This car runs on a multi-fuel system using petrol, methanol, hydrogen, and ethanol. Gocha claims that the use of multiple fuels means he was able to register his car as a "hybrid" in California, meaning he gets to take this monster into the often wide-open carpool lanes of Los Angeles!

Here's where the story gets a little suspicious, and no offense to Gocha is meant by this. After all, Gocha has to realize that there will be skeptics when a relative unknown claims to have put something like this together. We all know that the GTR XX uses the GM LS7 engine which powers the Corvette. Gocha says his car utilizes an engine with a 381 cubic inch plant generating an unbelievable 2,500 horsepower, in part thanks to the twin turbos. We instantly thought that the engine he was using was the LSX from GM Performance Parts, which is capable of handling that kind of horsepower. However, the spec sheet says the block is from billet aluminum while the LSX is made of cast iron. He says his engine uses a 3.000" stroke and 4.500" bore, which would actually be a 382 cu. inch plant. His billet aluminum engine block and cylinder head has four injectors of varying sizes per cylinder, combined with racing fuel pumps capable of delivering six gallons (22.7 liters) per minute. Apparently, you can go really really fast in this car, just not for long. The engine also makes generous use of ceramic, titanium, and carbon to keep the weight down.

While the MT900 GTR normally goes from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds, Gocha claims his version gets there in just over 2.5 seconds. His car allegedly hits 150 mph in 6.7 seconds, and 250 mph in 17.5 seconds. The car is capable of a nine second quarter-mile, reaching 178 mph by the time it gets there. Even more astonishing is the sprint to stop time. This car allegedly goes from zero to 150mph and back to a dead stop in 8.7 seconds. That's even faster than the Ultima GTR 0-100-0 time of 9.4 seconds, which seems remarkable.

But also seems dubious.

Helping to achieve these unbelievable times is the car's aerodynamic body kit. As seen in these photos Gocha and co. have created a new front splitter, new dive planes, and a fully adjustable rear wing built from carbon fiber. Also added are new air intakes and outlets on the sides, and new intakes on the roof and upper body. They installed a full-length air ducting channel via the flat belly pan to get the best downward force possible.

Intense Automotive Design also claims to have developed an all-wheel-drive system of titanium and carbon fiber, matching the all-titanium suspension system. Carbon fiber Dymag wheels have a magnesium center, and uses titanium lug nuts to attach to the car. Front wheels measure 11.5x19", with bigger 14x20" rear wheels. With all that effort going in to weight savings, you wonder why an Alpine 7.1 Dolby Digital DVD system would be included. The In-Car PC and GPS also adds weight.

In the end, thanks to a 90 pound (40.8 kg) Trentek chassis, the extensive engine tuning, and body modifications, the car has an actual top speed of over 305 mph (491 km/h). In theory, the car could withstand 375 mph (603.5 km/h), while maintaining aerodynamics to 400 mph (643.7 km/h). Gocha says the car is scheduled for a few sprints during the 2009 Bonneville Speed Week, before it heads to the Nurburgring. Perhaps wishful thinking but Gocha also states IAD will try to score Michael Schumacher as the car's test driver.

Now, before you start casting stones, let us keep in mind another little twin-turbo Mosler that goes by the name of "Red Devil." Remember this car? Built by Nelson Racing Engineering for U.S. Mosler dealer Mike Vietro (aka Corvette Mike or Mosler Mike) it produces 1800hp (1635hp confirmed) and has performance specs within range of this suppossed Land Shark.

So, to John Gocha, if your car is really just a fantasy, by all means keep living the dream. But if you've built this thing for real, we need to see it to believe it. Scratch that; we need to drive it (or see it driven) to believe it.

VW Golf GTI Mk VI

In 1976 the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI was the budget driver's dream car with its 4-speed gearbox and 81 kW (110 PS) 1.6-litre engine. Today the GTI makes 155kW (210PS) and 280Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre TSI engine. It will go from 0 - 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). VW says it uses an average of 7.3 litres of fuel per 100km (38.7 mpg UK). Standard issue wheels are 17-inches wide but there are 18s available as options.

VW is harking back to this icon with the new GTI. Unveiled as a concept to the public for the first time at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show the Mk VI GTI boasts plenty of garb that many bigger more expensive cars cannot match. In styling the car the team kept the original car in mind. The red frame around the outer front grille is typical GTI and sets it apart from "lesser" Golf models. It has single chrome tailpipes on either side, a GTI rear spoiler, a rear air diffuser, an electronic diff lock, smoked taillights and green tinted windows. The brake calipers are painted red.

The GTI moniker appears on the left instead of the right as it was previously done. The car itself is longer and wider, and it looks more muscular as well. The interior features things like stainless steel pedals, radio/ navigation with a touch screen and heated front seats.

In a few days sales of the new 2009 GTI begin in Germany, in Europe within the next couple of weeks, and America and Asia follow towards the end of the summer.
